When it comes to our health, there are many potential concerns that can occupy the mind. But a new survey shows that, of all the possible things that can be worrying us, oral health tops the list. And, alongside that concern, people are more worried about the appearance of their smile than the other aspects of their appearance.
Fortunately, good preventive care is an effective way to maintain oral health. And if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your smile, cosmetic dentistry offers solutions for almost any concern you might have.
Oral Health a Leading Concern
The new survey asked 2000 Americans about their current health priorities. They could choose more than one, and 83% said they were prioritizing oral health, compared to only 78% who said they were prioritizing mental health, 74% who prioritized exercise, and 71% who prioritized diet.
This is good, but we can only hope that people will turn their concerns into action. Unfortunately, only 64% brush their teeth twice a day, about the same percentage as see their dentist even once a year! And flossing, one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from gum disease, is only done daily by about 30% of people.
But maybe these numbers will creep up as people prioritize their oral healthcare. We are happy to help people achieve and maintain good oral health.
Embarrassed by Smiles
The survey also asked people about which aspects of their appearance embarrassed people. In response to that question, 45% said they were embarrassed by their smile, while only 45% said their weight and 30% said their hair.
These results are consistent with other surveys, which show that many people are concerned about the appearance of their smile.
Among the most common cosmetic concerns are:
Discolored teeth
Crooked or crowded teeth
Gaps between teeth
Chipped or worn teeth
Missing teeth
While these problems are common, we have good news: there are solutions to all of them! In fact, there are multiple treatment approaches that can help you overcome your concerns to have a beautiful smile.
For discolored teeth, teeth whitening is the most commonly used procedure. Many people use over-the-counter solutions, but professional whitening is better.
For crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth, there are several orthodontic solutions. In fact, we can go beyond the limits of traditional orthodontics to help improve the function of teeth and the shape of the jaw.
Chipped or worn teeth can be treated with dental bonding. Veneers can also fix chipped or worn teeth, as well as all the other concerns we’ve mentioned.
And if you have missing teeth, dental implants are a great solution.
